Masculinity

Apply any concept in Chapter 7 (Mansfield) to a movie, television show, commercial, or anything else in “popular culture.” If possible, provide a link to it. Don’t just discuss masculinity in general though – specifically draw upon something Mansfield states (or summarizes) in Chapter 7 about masculine subjectivity. Explain the concept you are applying in your own words and then relate it to something in popular culture. Have fun with this one – be creative!

Mansfield claims that "to be victorious (men) must lose everything but their hard military bodies. To do good they must enact their own evil." In the clip I have chosen the boys from south park are attempting to raise money to end canada's strike. In a stroke of genius cartman comes up with an idea and the clip i have shown is that idea.

Using the ideas already presented from mansfield (admittedly from a markedly different context) it is possible to say that this approach would identify butters singing what what in the butt as him recognizing his own evils and confronting them in order to save canada.

In a later analysis of masculinity Mansfield critiques the undertones of Bly's Iron John. Mansfield states that the undertones imply "that the dominance of feminine influence over the boy-child relationship is retarding in all cultures" There is a demasculinisation occurring in all public spheres where feminist values are successful. Butter's fascination with what can only be described as a deportation from the hetero-normative sexual models would be an example of the retardation implied by Bly, especially Butter's claim to please be gentle because he's delicate like a flower

I really think this discussion could use some background on Samwell, who also deports from the hetero-normative models.

i could see why samwell could be viewed as important but he really creeps me out with his eyebrows and over emphasizing words... I thought sticking to the episode plot line would be most effective
