Benveniste language and subjectivity

Pick three arguments that Emile Benveniste makes in "Subjectivity in Language" (in the identity reader) and summarize them here in your own words. Indicate whether you agree or disagree with each of the arguments he is making.

"By what right does language establish the basis for subjectivity?"
Benveniste claims that language as a structure would not exist if not for subjectivity. Language is used as a form of expression to convey the needs of the subject without language the subject is unable to convey these fundamental forms and would lose there subjectivity. The use of "I" is another interesting example of this idea, there is no all encompassing definition for I since it varies from individual to individual. The definition of I as it pertains to me is completely different from the definition which would pertain to you or another.

Benveniste asserts that the terms I and Other are erroneous for there attempt to reduce the duality to a single term. In accordance with Lacan she claims that the definition of I must be established in the mind of the individual before they can become sperated from the other. But the seperation only occurs within there own consciousness. The terms do not allow for realities that preexist the formation of the consciousness, systems that have been in place such as language and society, when she argues that the dialectic reality is a problematic formation within language it is because of language that the problem exists. The need to express subjectivity creates the duality within the dialectic reality, as she describes it, and is responsible for the short sided view.

Communication as a system is an interested theory. Communication is an ongoing daily process that extends beyond our spoken words. Communication includes the environment, the participants, and many other elements which are unconsciously accounted for. Communication is not simply the transmission of information but the process by which people work to develop a shared meaning. In terms of subjectivity communication is the vehicle and language is the driver. Language is the means by which we work to understand our surroundings. As already discussed many theorist feel that subjectivity does not exist until you develop an understanding of your surroundings and how they impact you. Communication is an example of this understanding as one would not act the same way they would in church as they do at a rock concert or a friday night kegger. Our ability to adapt our communicative styles to these situations is evidence of our subjectivity.
